CHAPTER SIXTEEN

NICK

It was a shitty practice. It always is the day after we lose a game. And yet, I can’t stop smiling as I unhook my pads from my skates. Because while these losers are going home to wallow in their sad misery, I’m heading to the hotel for a mid-day quickie.

Usually Prestyn and I meet after she’s done with work but for whatever reason she was available earlier today. Not that I’m complaining. The last couple of weeks have been some of the most relaxing of my life, and all because of a certain heiress who would kick me in the balls if she heard me call her that.

“What are you smiling about?” Becker plops down next to me, yanking his sweaty shirt over his head and tossing it in the laundry bin.

“Nothing.” I keep my head down, focusing on a stubborn knot while I try to school my expression.

“I don’t believe that. You did just as many drills as the rest of us and Coach’s mood is nothing to smile about.”

He’s right. After we were slaughtered last night by Chicago, Coach was pissed. I take full responsibility in missing three shots, that led to us getting our asses kicked, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to block shots when the defensive line is doing their jobs, too.

“Can’t a guy just be happy that a bad day is over and we’re all moving on?”

I finally get the knot undone and toss my pads to the side so I can begin working on my laces.

“Nope,” Becker says with a shake of his head. “That’s not it.”

I make a fatal mistake and look up at him. Whatever he sees on my face gives him the answer he was hoping for.

“You slick motherfucker.”

I furrow my brow in confusion. “Huh?”

“You’re getting laid, aren’t you?”

“Oh geez,” I breathe and return to my task.

Becker doesn’t let it go, though. “You are! Who is she? Do I know her? Wait. It’s the chick living in Tucker’s pool house, isn’t it? What’s her name?” He snaps his fingers a few times before her name comes to him. “Ellington! No, Ellie. Ellie, right? That’s who you’re fucking?”

“Oh hell no. I like Ellie. And I really like her kid. But she’s a little too aggressive for me.”

“Then who is it?”

After sliding my feet out of my skates, I pull off one sock. “Who says there’s anyone? You came to this conclusion on your own.”

“Nuh-uh. I’m right. Hey, Tiger.” Our teammate stops right in front of us, his hand holding the towel wrapped around his waist closed. “Look at him.” Becker gestures to me. “What do you see on his face?”

Tiger cocks his head as he looks at me before he smiles. “Oh you’re totally getting laid.”

I roll my eyes and grab at my second sock.

“I told you,” Becker exclaims victoriously. “Now spill. Who is she— Fuck, you asshole.” He bats the sweaty sock out of his face that I just flung at him. “Those are your lucky socks.
